Penelope Cruz Comes Home to Film New Movie

Spanish-born actress Penelope Cruz was recently photographed arriving on the island of Lanzarote. This sun-soaked tourism paradise will provide the backdrop for Cruz's latest movie. Few details have been released about "Los Abrazos Rotos" ("The Broken Embrace"). In fact, exact locations for filming had not even been finalized upon the crew's arrival in Lanzarote. It is tentatively set for release in Spain in 2009.

The movie is written and directed by Spain's own Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar seems to be smitten with Penelope Cruz, at least for her talent. Almodovar is openly gay, but maintains a close friendship with Cruz. The two are often seen together in public, especially when working together. He has directed Cruz in a number of other films, including "All About My Mother" (1999) and "Volver" (2006). Her portrayal of a mother dealing with a teenage daughter's crisis in "Volver" led to Cruz's nomination for a "Best Actress" Oscar. Cruz was the first Spanish actress ever to receive such an honor. Their long history and ability to mesh undoubtedly led Almodovar to invite Cruz to star in his latest project, "Los Abrazoz Rotos."

Work began immediately upon the crew's arrival on Lanzarote on May 25, 2008. The first order of business: scouting film locations. They were spotted just a day later at Lanzarote's famous Guatiza Cactus Garden. The area was highly guarded and Cruz shielded from the public. Time will tell if the trademark windmill of Jardin de Cactus makes a guest appearance in "Los Abrazos Rotos." The film will likely contain some aerial shots of the area since film crews were spotted in a helicopter overhead.

Penelope Cruz has starred in a number of American films. Some of her U.S. credits include "All the Pretty Horses" (2000), "Blow" (2001) and "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" (2001). Cruz won an Italian Academy Award for her performance in the 2005 film "Don't Move."

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1974, Cruz spent the early years of her life devoted to another art. She studied ballet until the age of 15. It was at the tender age of 17 that she was cast in her first film "Jamon Jamon" under Spanish director Bigas Luna. Within just a few years she caught the attention of Pedro Almodovar. Since that time, she has earned a special place in his heart and his movies.

Penelope Cruz has more than just a beautiful face and acting talent going for her. Cruz is known by her colleagues for her strong drive and work ethic. She is also hailed for her compassion and generosity. She spent a week volunteering in Calcutta at Mother Theresa's children's sanctuary. She later donated her entire salary from the movie "The Hi Lo Country" to the sanctuary. Cruz is also an outspoken opponent of the intrusive and invasive practices of the paparazzi.

Cruz appeared to be happy to be working in Spain again. Though Lanzarote is miles from her hometown, Spain holds a special place in her heart. Altogether the film crew spent about two weeks on sunny Lanzarote. "Los Abrazos Rotos" is scheduled for its American release in late 2009, about eight months after its Spanish debut. Between coming home and working with her favorite director, Cruz's newest movie may be her best yet.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Movie Review- Three's a Crowd

Killing a mummy may prove difficult to do, but the makers of the third installment of the Mummy movies proves you can kill a franchise. Not to mention, this movie, which sports a father son story line, very much repeats in the same fashion as the tired Indiana Jones movie just out.

While there are some redeeming qualities, those of which star the Asian powerhouse team of Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, the "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" is tired, and lack luster. While the special effects and the action are elevated, the over all pace and feel of the move is tired.

Taking place seven years after the second installment "The Mummy Returns," the film takes place in China with Rick played by Fraser battling a massive army of terra cotta soldiers led by the Dragon Emperor, played by Jet Li. The Emporer was cursed into suspended animation by a beautiful sorceress, played by Yeoh. This movie incidentally has no mummies in it.

Aside from some very cool CGI special effects, the story line proves to be a rehash of formula, and the talents of Li and Yeoh are undeniably wasted.

The movie starts with Rick O'Connell living the domestic life, retired from the archeological life, is too easily persuaded to help Rick's brother in law Johathan and son Alex whom are in Shang hai. The two have stumbled upon the long sought after tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The story is complete with a magic elixir, a secret stone, and only one way to kill the Dragon Emperor. While they try to revive some of the former magic of the American bravado, the film still comes up short, as old tricks die hard.

While Fraser is only able to revive the original charm of the original character, he is drowned out by too many feature actors. Monica Bello, who replaced Rachel Weisz ( can you say Oscar?) seems to modern to be playing in a period piece, and does not do action very well. Ford, as Alex, is on the annoying side, and only time will tell whether it was the role or the actor.

As for Li, he only appears in human form in the beginning of the movie and at the end. There really is not much screen time where you get to appreciate him, as the majority of the movie is covered by a CG Emperor. Both Asian actors do not benefit from the highly scripted characters or the heavy costuming.

They say that the third time is a charm, but in this case, three's a crowd. Special effects alone cannot make a movie. When will they learn that flash is no substitute for a good story line? The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor starts August 1, 2008.

The popularity of films easily spreads to their makers too. People identify certain films and the way they are made or the message they carry with that of the makers. Some all time favorite moviemakers are Alfred Hitchcock, D.W. Griffith, Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, Federico Fellini, Jean Renoir, Ingmar Bergman, and Akira Kurosawa.

The British born moviemaker cum producer, Alfred Hitchcock, is considered as the pioneer of suspense and thriller movies. He directed nearly sixty films whose time span ranged from the silent to the talkies era. Hitchcock is one of the best known and most popular of moviemakers of all time. The major elements of his movies are fear and fantasy where the protagonists are innocent people. They are shown as caught up in various circumstances that are mostly beyond their control and understanding.

In 1925 Alfred Hitchcock directed his first movie The pleasure Garden that was a major commercial success. Some of his other popular movies are Rebecca, Psycho, Dial M for Murder, The Man Who Knew Too Much, etc.

D.W. Griffith, often considered as the father of modern movie making, made over 450 short films. His movies consist of two parts. He was good at both story-telling as well as technical know how. He is best known for his controversial 1915 film The birth of a Nation. Through his mastery in editing, he invented and popularized the concept of cross cutting. In layman's terms, this means alternating between different events with the aim of building suspense. His cinematographer, Billy Bitzer, shares a lot of the credit for cinematic innovations. Some of his commercially successful movies are Broken Blossom, Way down East, and Orphans of the Storm.

Sergei Eisenstein was a revolutionary Soviet Russian film director known for his ground breaking use of montage. He believed that editing could be used for more than just clarifying a scene or a moment, or for establishing a linkage of a related scene. Though his films were silent they are still noted for their innovations. Some of his masterpieces are Strike, Battleship Potemkin, and Oktober.

The silent movies of Charlie Chaplin have the strange ability of talking to the audience. Hence, he is counted as one of the all time favorite moviemakers. He was one of the first Hollywood superstars who drew a record number of audiences to the theatres. We can say that his movies stood between entertainment for children and the seriousness of adults. His movies talked about social, political, and economic injustice, all in such an appealing way that it seemed less didactic and more entertaining.

In the movies of Jean Renoir, one glimpses the world of art and film mingled into each other. He engaged masterful visuals with the help of lighting, location, focus and camera angle that added a new and exciting dimension to the film. The well-known films of Renoir are The River, Diary of Chambermaid, and The Woman on the Beach.

Filming in Malta began in the 1970s. One of the earliest movies filmed in Malta is "Orca: Killer Whale." The 1977 film starred Richard Harris as Captain Nolan and Charlotte Rampling as Rachel Bedford. The movie brought attention to the plight of the killer whale and introduced movie viewers to the beautiful Mediterranean Sea and parts of Malta.

Popeye Village

In 1980, Sweethaven Village was created on Malta. The Robin Williams movie was filmed in Malta, and the Sweethaven Village still stands today. Though it is not being used to film movies, it still serves the island well as a tourist attraction. The village is open to tourists seven days per week and offers a variety of family activities.

A Previous Engagement

The latest movie to be filmed entirely on the island of Malta was "A Previous Engagement" starring Juliet Stevenson and Daniel Stern. The Canadian-Maltese co-production was released in the U.S. in May 2008. In conjunction with the movie's opening, a contest has been organized. One winner will receive an all-expenses-paid vacation to Malta and stay in the Xara Palace in Mdina where the movie was filmed.

Other movies that have been filmed in Malta include:

* "Midnight Express." Some scenes were filmed at Fort St. Elmo in 1978.

* "Raise the Titanic" in 1980.

* "Cutthroat Island." The popular Geena Davis and Matthew Modine film was shot primarily near Vittoriosa. Some scenes were filmed in Mdina, Fort St. Elmo and the Dingli Cliffs. Water tanks were provided by the Mediterranean Film Studios.

* "White Squall." The violent storm experienced in this movie was filmed at the Mediterranean Film Studios in 1996.

* "U-571." The star-studded cast included Matthew McConnaughey, Jon Bon Jovi, Harvey Kitel and Bill Paxton. The tanks used in the movie are the property of the Mediterranean Film Studios. One night-time scene was filmed in the city of Valletta at the Grand Harbor in 2000.

* "The Count of Monte Cristo." In 2002, Valletta and Vittoriosa were temporarily transformed into Marseille for the filming of this movie. The lovemaking scene was filmed on the rocks near Fort St. Elmo. St Mary's Tower on Comino served as the Chateau d'If.

* "Pinocchio." The 2002 production of Pinocchio included scenes filmed in the Mediterranean Film Studios.

* "Swept Away." The 2002 creation of Madonna and Guy Ritchie was filmed on both Comino and Malta. Madonna's snorkeling scene was filmed at the Blue Lagoon on Comino.

* "Helen of Troy." The 2003 mini series was filmed at Fort Ricasoli and on Comino at the Blue Lagoon.

* "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." This 2003 hit starred Sean Connery and was filmed on Gozo at Xlendi. The submarine scenes were filmed at the Mediterranean Film Studios.

* "Troy." The 2004 blockbuster hit starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom was filmed at Fort Ricasoli. Parts were filmed in Mellieha and on Comino Island. The movie's producers used Malta's natural beauty and ruins to enhance the authenticity of the movie.

* "A Different Loyalty." Starring Sharon Stone, this movie was filmed in 2004 at Fort St. Elmo, which gives a visual representation of the city of Beirut. Parts of the movie were filmed on the Golden Sands Beach.

* "Alexander." In 2004, Valletta's Grand Harbor doubled for the ancient port city of Alexandria. The movie starred Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell.

* "Gladiator." The Russell Crowe movie was shot at a replica built at Fort Ricasoli with a night time scene being filmed just outside Vittoriosa at Couvre Port.

Outdoor movies probably originated with the invention of the drive-in theater in 1933. Richard M. Hollingshead of New Jersey was the first person to open one of these venues, but his idea quickly spread to several other states. Even though the speakers and pictures weren't always high quality, drive-ins were popular because of the concession stands that accompanied them and because they provided an activity that the whole family could enjoy together.

In spite of their popularity among families and youth in earlier days, drive-in movies have become rare novelties now for several reasons. First of all, real estate is more expensive today than it was in the 1930's, and that makes owning enough space for cars to park a bit costly. And secondly, drive-in business is limited by several unalterable factors like weather conditions, colder seasons, and a set number of darkened hours that are suitable for showing outdoor movies.

Even though drive-ins are disappearing, if you still want to enjoy the outdoor ambiance and large crowds that come with outdoor movies, there are other options you can choose. One course of action you can take is to make your own outdoor movie system. It doesn't need to be a permanent structure or anything fancy. In fact, many of them can be set up and torn down in a couple of minutes. All you need is a computer, some speakers, a screen of some sort and a projector.

Or, if you don't want to deal with storing the tools and ironing out technical difficulties yourself, there are a lot of companies that will bring everything - including the equipment, movie and refreshments - right to your door. Hiring a company that caters to your needs is definitely more expensive than most home-made outdoor theaters, but the cost can be offset by selling concessions or charging for admission.

No matter what option you choose, you'll find that watching a movie outside is a completely different experience than going to an indoor theater. While the film rolls, you can sprawl out on the lawn and some air mattresses or curl up in blankets if the night air is a little cool. Anything you feel like cooking is allowed to come with you and the stars glittering overhead create a matchless backdrop for the whole event.

The History Of Horror Films

Horror movies are often diverse in plots and characterizations, but they are all able to evoke spine-tingling thrills in moviegoers. The history of this genre can be traced back to the late 1890s, and the influence of these early films is still felt in the entertainment industry today.

The father of horror movies may be Georges Melies. In 1896, he depicted otherworldly events in his movie, "The House of the Devil". Two years later, Japanese producers entered the horror arena with two movies. And in 1910, Edison Studios in the United States created "Frankenstein". These early offerings into this genre showed creativity and the ability to evoke genuine emotions from the audience.

Writers, directors and actors in horror films have historically sought to create a level of fear that rivets moviegoers to their seats through adrenaline rushes. This has been accomplished in a variety of ways, from demonic activity, monsters on the loose or extraterrestrial beings. Although the premise of these films may differ in certain ways, the basic idea is to capitalize on everyday fears by making them larger than life. Viewers connect with this film fare because there is a disturbingly real sense that these events could actually happen in some way.

Most horror films have a single villain, and early movies took ideas for this character from literature. Dracula, Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde easily made the transition from print to the big screen. Another interesting depiction of fear was created when movies explored societal insecurities or aberrations. The plots of these films included characters with bizarre personality traits, an apocalypse type situation or the presence of demonic activity. In the 1950s, science fiction began to influence the horror genre and gave it a modern, yet equally maniacal feel. In these movies, there was a sense of overcoming alien invasions to ensure the future of the world.

While horror films seem designed to "entertain" audiences, many directors and producers used them as vehicles to express commentaries on society. For instance, George Romero's classic cult film "Night of the Living Dead" expressed insightful views on human nature during the turbulent Vietnam War era.

Alfred Hitchcock took horror home. He didn't use extraordinary monsters, but injected a dose of terror in everyday people. In "Psycho" Freudian logic explained the action, and also gave his audience an open-ended fear to take with them.

Historically, the films in the horror genre have evolved and experimented with different types of themes. From aliens to zombies, characters have taken many faces and personality traits. Settings have featured private homes or entire countries. Additionally, the level of intensity is also a variable, either quietly turning up the tension with a psychological aspect or opening the floodgates of fear with explicit elements. Whatever the mode, horror films definitely fit the bill for many moviegoers.

How to Download Movies on the Internet

Quite a lot of people want to download movies and their favorite TV shows directly from the internet, but not very many know where to start. This walkthrough will take you by the hand and lead you through every step, and by the end you'll be downloading movies in no time. Please note that this is for PC users. Mac users will actually have a much easier time performing these functions.

There are two methods by which you may view your movie. You can either watch the movies straight from your computer, or you can burn the movie to a DVD and watch it from your TV set as you would a regular DVD. Most people prefer the DVD method.

What You'll Need

Blank DVD's 8.5 GB
4.7 GB DVD's are good only for 1 hour shows and shorter movies. Buy the larger ones. The size will be clearly listed on the packaging; if in doubt ask the store clerk.

DVD Writer
Most DVD Writers that are on the market today are inexpensive and cost less than two commercial DVD's. You may already have one on your computer if you have a newer machine check the front of your computer for the DVD logo. You may have been using one as a CD burner and not even know!

If you are purchasing new, and aren't familiar with the innards of a PC and installing drives, get an external DVD writer that you can just hook up with a USB port to your computer. Keep in mind that this option will cause your DVD's to copy a little slower, so you may want to pay someone to install an internal DVD writer if you care about how fast your DVD's will copy.

For a really fun touch, get a DVD writer with Lightscribe technology. Lightscribe allows you to literally burn an image into the face of the CD while you are copying it. It isn't a full color picture, rather more like an outline with the details of the picture, but the end result looks really cool.

DVD Burning Software
You will require software that will allow you to convert the files that you are downloading into a format that is readable by your home DVD player, so that you can just put it into your DVD and hit play without having to worry about the format that it is in. Often this software comes with DVD Writers, and is easy to both install and use.

Want to Skip Burning DVD's?
If your computer and television are reasonably close together, you can purchase an S Video or VGA cable to go between the two. This will allow you to set up your TV as a secondary monitor on your computer and watch movies from the comfort of your couch. You need a video card in your computer that will let you do this. Mine is an ATI Radeon Pro that I bought back in 2003. Most newer computers are already equipped for this. You also need plenty of disk space on your hard drive and a cordless keyboard and mouse won't hurt either. They will be acting in the place of a remote control. I do both and quite frankly decided that it wasn't worth the bother and moved to burning DVD's like the rest of the world.

More Disk space
If you don't already have a large hard drive, you will want to purchase a larger hard drive to store your movies before burning them to DVD. Until you can get more disk space, you will want to limit yourself to downloading a few movies at a time, burning them immediately when you do, and then erasing them from your hard drive. Keep in mind that you should always keep 1 Gigabyte free on your hard drive in order for Windows to run seamlessly on your PC. Anything less than a gigabyte of free disk space and you will find that your system performance degrades significantly.

Downloading Software

The world has moved from using P2P programs like Limewire or Morpheus to using Torrents and programs like UseNext. Torrents are a way to break up the original file so that the entire file is never resident on any one computer. This allows for faster download times for everyone.

Install A Program
There are several equally good programs on the market which allow you to download movies; most are free, and may be downloaded from the recommended Movie Download site.

Downloading and installing is easy. Any of the movie download sites above give complete instructions on using the software. If the software is blocked because you are using either client at work, it is perhaps best to do this from home only.

It is also advisable to not download from work because it is quite likely that you will be detected by IT technicians; Movie downloads eat up a huge amount of bandwidth, something every company is trying to conserve today as internet hosting companies are coming up with reasons to charge for bandwidth use.

Search a Movie Website

Now we come to the part where you actually find the files that you want. Even with all of my tech savvy, I was stumped at this point initially because I was used to the environment of the peer-to-peer programs like Napster, where you could search within the software. With movie download sites you can do this. It gets a little confusing sometimes but the movie download sites will give you step by step directions. You need to login to your download site to search for what you want.

It works just like any other site that you search on, plug in your desired movie title and it will give you results.

A Word on Formats

Make sure that the file that you choose is in a format that is friendly for DVD conversion if that is your end goal; just to refresh, DVD conversion is getting it to play in your home DVD player.

When referring to formats, what you are going to need to look for is the File Extension, or the three letters preceded by a period at the end of the file. For example, a Microsoft Word document has .doc as its file extension.

Formats like .mkv are not going to translate well to DVD. You want to look for an .avi file or an .mpg file. AVI files are the most common.

If all you can download is a less common format like .mkv, you will probably have to watch the movie on your computer.

Downloading Your Movie

You will then get a window popping up which asks you which components of the download you wish to initiate. If it is just one file, click OK. This is a great way to browse for the stuff that you want or don't want, as the case may be with larger packages such as entire TV series. Specify the folder that you wish to download to. Once you click OK, the torrent software that you installed earlier will do the rest of the work.

Copying Your Movie

This is generally just a question of opening your DVD writing software, following the prompts, and popping your DVD into the drive. Here are a couple of helpful tips;

Make Sure you Choose DVD

Most DVD burning software will give you the choice of making a data CD or making a DVD for use in your DVD player. Make sure you choose DVD.

Don't Save an Image on Your Computer

Most DVD burning software will also give you the option to save the finished file on your computer. I would advise against this unless you have purchased a 500 gig hard drive; it will eat up tons of disk space just to have it as a backup. If you have the room, you will want to say yes to the option of keeping the original file just in case something goes wrong with the burning process, but this can be deleted after you have successfully burned the DVD.

Make Sure the DVD is 8.5 Gigs

This is very important. If you went out and bought smaller DVD's against that earlier advice, here is where you are going to run into problems. Most DVD burning software will allow you to split up the movie into two halves, but this is choppy and will inevitably end up in the loss or repetition of a portion of the movie.

Bad Disc - Troubleshooting

While this is usually a simple process, sometimes the DVD's don't work in the DVD player. There are a few reasons for this.

Cheap DVD Player

If you purchased an inexpensive DVD Player, this is where it is going to start to show. If you have rented DVD's from the store and they haven't played, it is almost a guarantee that the discs made by your computer will not function 100% of the time in your DVD player. The only way to really combat this is to get a new, better quality DVD player.

Make sure that you didn't just make a direct copy of the file; make sure that it made a proper DVD copy. Pop the DVD back into your computer to check that it has indeed been converted to a different format. The file on the DVD shouldn't be just one file, it should have been separated into different files that you won't recognize. If it is simply a data DVD, pop another one in and be sure to choose the DVD rather than data option.

Movie posters can stand by itself as a work of art. They decorate otherwise drab walls of theaters and put life into them. They tell a story, they speak something about the films they are promoting. As the song goes a picture can paint a thousand words.

The movie posters are employed to advertise a movie. They came into existence since the earliest public exhibitions of film. The movie posters started as placards listing the line up movies to be shown at the theater. With the onset of the 1900s, the movie posters took on a different turn. They have now illustrations of a scene from individual movies.

In the beginning the movie posters were created and produced solely for use of the theaters. The film ads were very necessary for a film to succeed. They were returned to the distributors after the film was done in theaters. This is true in the United States of America. The movie posters were returned to the National Screen Service (NSS). But somehow some of the movie posters found their way into the hands of collectors and film poster dealers. This is especially true when the NSS stopped its operation in 1985.

By this time the film studios took over direct production and distribution of movie posters for the films they produced. This started the spreading out of the process of making and distributing movie posters. Nowadays film posters are produced in great quantities to promote a movie because they are now being sold directly to the public by retailers who bought them from studio distributors. Movie posters also have now invaded the internet. The studios that created these film ads placed them on their websites for the promotion of their movie films. The easy access and readily available movie posters do not now make collectors’ items. Rare movie posters can cost up to thousands of dollars.

Movie studios then have to make several movie ads for one theater since theaters then only show one movie at a time. Thus different sizes of movie posters were created to promote the movie film all over the theater. But with the advent of multiple screen cinemas sizes of movie posters were standardized. This is because the theater spaces have to be apportioned among more films. But there are still different sized posters for distribution to other countries.

Movie posters in one way or another have helped greatly the promotion of a certain film. It lasts, if cared for properly, and it can serve as décor on wall of a room or walls which need to be lightened up. The posters can become a sort of collection. It makes a certain movie unforgotten sort of immortalizing it. The movie posters provoke certain emotions in the viewer most especially when it is an old movie and a good one.

It makes one wax nostalgic for movies of long ago. Day in and day out while looking at the movie posters of old movies serve as a reminder when the world was not as chaotic as it is today.

The Smurfs Movie
Literally hundreds of Blue, shirtless, male-dominated race of gnomes are coming to the Hollywood silver screen. The lovable cartoon show from the eighties called The Smurfs is confirmed for a feature film.

While it’s a little confusing to say that the franchise is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year. (What happened to “it’s an eighties cartoon?”) Well, as many of us young folks who grew up during the eighties aren’t aware of is that The Smurfs were actually started by a Belgian guy named Pierre Culliford. Sharing his heritage later on with others such as Jean Claude Van Damme, Culliford ,or better known as Peyo debuted The Smurfs as a comic strip back at Lafig Belgium in a magazine called Le Journal de Spirou. The original name was Les Schtroumpfs. (Maybe Col. Guile, i mean…Mister Damme probably read it on the funny papers as a kid).

It wasn’t until a couple of decades later when the little blue gremlins made the transition and crossed the big pond over to North America, where they were welcomed with a television show of their own. With the production by Hanna-Barbera (famous for Yogi Bear and a dozen others), The Smurfs quickly won the hearts of children, and stuck by until pretentious scriptwriters aka Richard Kelly could use them as a subject to showcase their wit. (Mr. Kelly, that bit about Smurfette was stretching it a little too much).

Anyway, back in 2002 some guy named Jordan Kerner decided to buy the rights to The Smurfs to make it into a movie. So after six years of planning and developing, we’re about to get the sole masterpiece of eighties tv show to modern movie adaptation. We hope so, but we don’t want to pull a Richard Kelly.

No specific word yet about the Director, Writer, Actor or anyone set to be in the production. All we know for now is that the whole gang of Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Lazy, Brainy, Grouchy, and many more will be brought to life using the latest computer-graphic technology, while Gargamel will most likely be a live actor.
